More people are killed in the home every week than die in road accidents.
Seventy six people are killed in accidents in the home every week, compared with 66 in road accidents, according to Department of Trade and Industry figures. In 1999 more than 2.8 million people needed hospital treatment following domestic accidents.
In recent years the Government has blamed over-ambitious TV home improvement programmes, which encourage people to take on the work themselves.
Should these jobs be left to the professionals? Why do so many accidents happen? Is there anything the Government can do to limit such accidents and deaths?
